Saturday Jun 22, 2019
Saturday Jun 22, 2019
School ain't over for Joel and Spencer, they need to get through School Daze first. This is only Spike's second feature but already there is everything you'll learn to love and loathe about Spike. This makes for a great intro Spike Lee's filmography.

He Got Game - 1998 - Episode 5
Thursday May 23, 2019
Thursday May 23, 2019
The boys are joined by John Cribbs of the Pink Smoke (https://thepinksmoke.com/) to dig into the underappreciated and somewhat forgotten, He Got Game. Spike's basketball drama stars Ray Allen, Denzel, and an ensemble cast including Riley's friend from the Initiative from Buffy Season 4. Spencer still feels betrayed by Allen's move to the Miami Heat 7 years ago.

Djibril Diop Mambety, A Special Episode
Wednesday May 22, 2019
Wednesday May 22, 2019
Joel and Spencer are joined by writer/director/actor Mtume Gant to discuss the great filmmaker Djibril Diop Mambety. During the 1970s, Mambety made a splash with the French New Wave infused Touki Bouki and didn't make another feature until 1992 with Hyenas. The guys discuss how these films relate to each other, the perception of Africa, consumerism, animals, and much more.
Warning: Touki Bouki has graphic footage of a cattle slaughterhouse and a goat getting slaughtered.

Million Dollar Baby - 2004 - Episode 4
Saturday May 04, 2019
Saturday May 04, 2019
J-Dawg and Spencer enter the ring and take on Million Dollar Baby. This is the final appearance of Clint Eastwood on We Cut Heads...so far. The boys discuss Swank's performance, Freeman's voice, Anthony Mackie's talent, and there's a few Clint impressions too.
Did you remember that Jay Baruchel, Mike Colter, Riki Lindhome, and Michael Pena were in Million Dollar Baby?

She Hate Me - Episode 3 - 2004
Wednesday Apr 24, 2019
Wednesday Apr 24, 2019
Finally! The Boys get to the classic, She Hate Me. You know the sex comedy corporate satire about lesbians, CGI Sperm races, Diabetes, and Watergate, that Spike joint that everyone loves. Joel and Spencer are joined by Marcus Pinn of PINNLAND EMPIRE and The Pink Smoke. She Hate Me is a bafflingly bad film. You gotta see it to believe it.
P.S. The Audio is not great. They are aware of that.

Daughters of the Dust, A Special Episode
Saturday Apr 13, 2019
Saturday Apr 13, 2019
Spencer and Joel tackle Julie Dash's first (and so far only) feature, Daughters of the Dust. This is a radical film. This is a landmark film. This is a beautiful art film made by a black woman, with a black female cast. The boys get into the LA Rebellion, the costumes, American History, and Malcolm X comes up again. Daughters of the Dust is on Netflix and other streaming services.

Unforgiven - 1992 - Episode 2
Sunday Apr 07, 2019
Sunday Apr 07, 2019
The boys close out the 1992 pairing with Clint's farewell to the traditional western. It pairs well with Malcolm X, in some very clear and some unexpected ways. Spencer hasn't enough Gene Hackman films and keeps calling Glenn Close or Gene Roddenberry. Joel hasn't many westerns and loves Wayne's World.

Malcolm X - Episode 1 - 1992
Saturday Mar 23, 2019
Saturday Mar 23, 2019
It Is Finally Here! Season 2, We Cut Heads: A Spike Lee Podcast! They're Back Baby! Joel and Spencer start off strong with the 3 and a half hour epic, Malcolm X. One of them knows more about Black history than the other. If you haven't seen Malcolm X, I'm not trying to be that guy but it's necessary viewing. This is not a stuffy, bland biopic. This is bold, aggressive, and powerful and so much more than that.

Ikiru - Episode 56 - 1952/1953
Friday Jan 04, 2019
Friday Jan 04, 2019
Finally, after over 2 years, J Dawg aka the Mummy and Spencer aka Gutter Cover get to the iconic Ikiru. Kurosawa's meditation on finding meaning in life while facing a death is as powerful now as it was in 1952 and will continue to be. This is the perfect film to conclude the Kurosawa season. We will be back in a few months with a new season and a few changes.
