The Class - 2008 - Episode 14
Monday Sep 23, 2019
Monday Sep 23, 2019
The boys go back to school with the Laurent Cantet Cannes Palme d'Or winner, Entre les murs aka The Class. It's an interesting concept but does not necessarily make a great film. They forgot to compare it to Miracle at St. Anna but there is nothing similar between the 2 films. If you're curious about the Class, give it a shot. It's good.

Sunday Sep 08, 2019
Sunday Sep 08, 2019
It's the year 2008 - The Dark Knight is out and Slum Dog Millionaire will win Best Picture. Also Spike's WW2 epic, Miracle at St. Anna, comes out to not much fanfare. Joel, Spencer, and Justin Harrison try to understand why it doesn't fully work.

Da Sweet Blood of Jesus - Episode 11 - 2014
Saturday Aug 10, 2019
Saturday Aug 10, 2019
The boys with guest, Marcus Pinn, talk about Spike's Ganja and Hess remake...Da Sweet Blood of Jesus. Unlike the majority, they like it. Da Sweet Blood isn't the same thing as Ganja and Hess. It's messier, more violent, crueler, colder, and just a different animal. If you haven't seen it, give it a shot. We spoil it but it doesn't matter. It's not nearly bad as people make it seem.
Quick Note: The audio changes towards the end. I hope it doesn't ruin the episode. It was a necessary fix.

Summer of Sam - Episode 9 - 1999
Thursday Jul 25, 2019
Thursday Jul 25, 2019
The boys survive the Summer of Sam with help from Gena Radcliffe (Kill by Kill podcast and The Spool) and Ben Sunday from the Ran episode in Kurosawa season. Spike's period piece explores the psyche of a pair of common New Yorkers during the summer of 1977. It's vulgar, sexual, brutal, and looks great (shot by Bamboozled and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind's DP Ellen Kuras!). There is a lot to get through with this film but it's still Spike, so it's not dull.

Losing Ground, A Special Episode
Saturday Jul 06, 2019
Saturday Jul 06, 2019
Joel and Spencer are joined by filmmaker, Mtume Gant, for Kathleen Collins' sole feature film. Losing Ground was completed in 1982 but never had a real release. Kathleen died 6 years later. Luckily, it has been restored and it's great. The film also stars Bill Gunn, Duane Jones, and Maritza Rivera. Soemtimes it's streaming in places but there is a DVD out there.
You can find Mtume Gant on Twitter - @SirCoreGant, and watch his short films on Vimeo.

Pelle the Conqueror - Episode 8 - 1988
Sunday Jun 30, 2019
Sunday Jun 30, 2019
Instead of talking about the Oscar winner, Joel and Spencer talk about the Cannes Winner! Pelle the Conqueror is the tale of an immigrant boy from Sweden and his dad's life in 1850s Denmark. Max von Sydow is great but he's always great. At some point, the boys talk about Boondock Saints for some reason.
