Spotlight - Episode 18 - 2015
Monday Nov 18, 2019
Monday Nov 18, 2019
The guys with help from Justin Harrison get to the bottom of the 2015 Best Picture winner, Spotlight. Tom Hooper's procedural about uncovering abuse from the Catholic Church. It's a powerful, angering, and important film but it's also great. There is a bit of crossover between this and Chi-Raq.

25th Hour - Episode 15 - 2002
Saturday Oct 12, 2019
Saturday Oct 12, 2019
Due to things out of our control, J Dawg and Darren could not record at the same time. So the first part is Spencer and Darren and the second part is Spencer and Joel. 25th Hour is the story of Monty Brogan and the last day of freedom before going to prison. It's a character piece in the wake of 9/11/2001 about broken and complicated New Yorkers. Also, Isiah Whitlock, Jr. does his signature line TWICE IN A SCENE!
Darren is responsible for a few podcasts - A Talking Cast!?, The Cast Next Door, As If, The Social Minute, I've Made A Huge Mistake, Prince: Track by Track, and some more (I've forgotten to put here). They can be found where Podcasts are usually found.

The Melvin Van Peebles Episode, A Special Episode
Monday Sep 30, 2019
Monday Sep 30, 2019
In the words of MC Paul Barman, "Race is a fake idea with real consequences." The guys with help from Czech filmmaker and podcaster, Martin Kessler, take a look at the first 2 films of Melvin Van Peebles. Watermelon Man (1970) and Story of a Three Day Pass (1968) are bold swings at the complex issue of racism. Van Peebles is an American maverick that made his voice loud and clear early on. If you haven't seen these films, watch them.

The Class - 2008 - Episode 14
Monday Sep 23, 2019
Monday Sep 23, 2019
The boys go back to school with the Laurent Cantet Cannes Palme d'Or winner, Entre les murs aka The Class. It's an interesting concept but does not necessarily make a great film. They forgot to compare it to Miracle at St. Anna but there is nothing similar between the 2 films. If you're curious about the Class, give it a shot. It's good.

It's the year 2008 - The Dark Knight is out and Slum Dog Millionaire will win Best Picture. Also Spike's WW2 epic, Miracle at St. Anna, comes out to not much fanfare. Joel, Spencer, and Justin Harrison try to understand why it doesn't fully work.
